Red Wing News - January 2002

1\31 The Flames outskated the Wings and quelled every come back atempt they made, beating
the Wings 4-3. Scoring were Shanahan, Robitaille, and Larionov. Next up: All-Star Weekend
in L.A.

1\30 Chris Chelios was added to the All Star roster and Pavel datsyuk was added to the
Young Guns game. Both were added as injury replacements.

1\29 The Wings really got banged around by the Oilers, but still managed a 1-1 tie. Scoring
was Holmstrom. Next up: at Calgary tomarrow.
Steve Yzerman had minor surgery on his knee yesterday and should be back in two weeks.

1\27 Brett Hull lit up his former mates with a hat trick and two assists. Detroit wins
5-2 over St. Louis. Also scoring were Datsyuk and Devereaux with a goal and two assists
each. Oh, by the way, they are all three on the same line. That line combined for 11
points. Next up: at Edmonton on Monday.
Steve Yzerman is back in Detroit and will not play the next two road games. This will
give him 10 days off (all-star break)to rest a sore knee. The Wings will recall Sean Avery
from Cincinnati to fill the hole.

1\26 Phoenix spent all night chasing the Wings around and the 4-1 Detroit win shows it.
Scoring were Maltby, Yzerman(#658, ties him with Messier for 7th all time), Shanahan, and
Larionov. Nick Lidstrom assisted on the Larionov goal giving him 600 career points. Manny
Legace got the start. The Wings are 24-4-3-0 at home (1st in the NHL). They have 31 games
remaining, only 10 of which are at home. Fortunately most are against Eastern Conference
teams so the travel shouldn't be all that bad. Next up: at St. Louis tonight. Detroit is
11-5-2-2 on the road thus far.
A few days ago the Wings signed a deal with the Grand Rapids Griffins to be their sole
AHL affiliate begining next season. Currently the Wings share the Cincinnati team with
Anaheim. The Wings will be able to have 13 prospects in Grand Rapids, including more than
one goaltender. The Griffins will take care of the rest of the roster. This was a problem
with the Cincinnati team because of limited roster space.

1\24 Brett Hull got two goals and salvaged the point for the lackluster Wings 2-2 with the
Sharks. Next up: Phoenix at the Joe on Friday.

1\21 Steve Yzerman set up Mathiew Dandenault for the OT winner and his 1000th assist. Also
scoring were Robitaille and Datsyuk. Next up: San Jose at the Joe on Wednesday.

1\19 Luc did it. He scored number 611 last night and passed Bobby Hull for most goals by a
left winger. Wings win 3-1. Also scoring were Hull(99th game winner, passes Bobby Hull for
third most all time), and Fedorov. Next up: Ottawa at the Joe on Sunday night.

1\17 The Wings didn't play well again and lost 3-2 in Dallas. Scoring were Devereaux and
Datsyuk. Next up: Washington at the Joe on Friday.

1\16 Phoenix jumped up 2-0 early and the Wings creept back with two Brett Hull goals and a
final of 2-2. Manny Legace got the start. Steve Yzerman is at 999 assists. Next up: at
Dallas tonight.

1\13 Starters for the NHL all star game were announced. Nick Lidstrom led all players in
votes and will start for the World team along with Hasek and Fedorov. Scotty Bowman will
coach the World team. Brendan Shanahan led all vote getters on the North American side.
(Freep) The Wings are talking with the Grand Rapids Griffins about an AHL affiliation
agreement, a team official said. Detroit and Anaheim currently share the Cincinnati Mighty
Ducks. Grand Rapids' affiliation agreement with Ottawa expires after this season. The
deal should be done in the next few weeks.

1\12 Dallas didn't stand a chance as Shanny scored two right out of the gate and led the
Wings to a 5-2 win. Also scoring were Maltby, Yzerman, and Larionov(en.) Shanny's first
goal was his 1000th NHL point. Next up: at Phoenix on Tuesday.

1\10 Down 4-1 after two, the Wings rally and beat Vancouver in OT. Scoring were Robitaille
(#610, ties Bobby Hull), Datsyuk, Shanahan, Hull, and Draper(winner.) Sean Avery got his
first NHL fighting major(Treveor Linden.) Next up: Dallas at the Joe Saturday afternoon.

1\6 Pavel Datsyuk, Igor Larionov, and Brendan Shanahan scored and led the Wings to a 3-1 win
over an injury depleted Colorado team. Hasek saved 13 of only 14 shots. Next up: Vancouver at
the Joe on Wednesday.

1\3 The Wings came out on fire and jumped to a 4-0 lead, then sat back and watched Anaheim
score 3 before putting it away with 1:33 remaining 5-3. Scoring were Shanahan(2), Robitaille,
Fedorov, and Dandenault. Next up: Colorado at the Joe Saturday afternoon.
Since the Wings have the best record in the West (and overall, for that matter) Scotty
Bowman will coach the World all-star team.

1\1 The Wings almost blew another late lead, but held on to win 4-2 over the Wild.
Scoring were McCarty, Robitaille, Duchesne, and Draper(en). The Wings have earned 61
points at the mid-season mark with a 28-8-3-2 record. Sergei Fedorov played defense
last night. Luc Robitaille netted the 608th goal of his career, tying him with Dino
Ciccarelli (my all-time favorite) for 11th place on the all-time list. Luc is now
two goals shy of sharing 10th place with Bobby Hull, and also tying the all-time mark
of 610 goals by a left winger. Next up: The Ducks at the Joe on Wednesday.
